NGC Coin Grading

Looking to get your collection or an individual coin graded independently? It can certainly add value, and also give you peace of mind on the authenticity of a rare coin.

Before you submit

Before you dive right in it is worth evaluating the condition of the coin and the cost of the process before you submit. If a coin has been cleaned or damaged you could very well get a ‘Details’ grade, which can be extremely disappointing. Try to be objective when viewing your collection, and select only the best quality coins to grade.

The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC)

NGC are based in the USA and have been grading coins since the 1940s. They are one of the most recognised grading companies worldwide and have certified more than 47 million coins. NGC certification consists of authentication, grading, attribution and encapsulation in clear plastic holders.

Grading is a team effort, with at least two professional numismatists examining every coin. Their grading system is based on the Sheldon Scale, from 1 (Poor) to 70.

NGC grading tiers

• Standard — all coins with a maximum value of £2,500
• Gold — common-date gold coins, maximum value £2,500 (no ancients)
• Economy — non-gold, maximum value £250
• Modern — coins struck 1965 to the present day, maximum value £1,500
• Ancient Basic (max £250) and Ancient Full Service (up to £2,500)
• High Value — items up to £7,500

Checklist for submitting your coins for grading

1. Print our submission form and fill in your name, return address, telephone number and email address.
2. List your coins — tick and enter the coins’ information into the columns, and list any NGC add-ons you require.
3. Sign and date your form.
4. Send securely — wrap your coin(s) securely and send via Special Delivery to PO Box 12131, Harlow, CM20 9LY. Email us to let us know when to expect the parcel; be sure to enter the full declared value, as your item will only be insured to the amount declared.
5. We log every coin — we will notify you on receipt and give you a personal account number and an individual submission number for each and every coin.
6. Return — your invoice is sent just before the return of your items. The process takes about 4–5 weeks. Once your coins are back in our office we will post them to you, or you can choose to submit them into our next monthly auction.
